GRICEL – A TANGO STORY

GRICEL – A TANGO STORY is a unique musical theatre production in which Tango Argentino meets Modern Dance, performed by a cast of world-class dancers and musicians from Argentina, Europe, and New York.

Created by award-winning choreographer Astria Apel, the work tells the true and moving story of the passionate and tragic love between Gricel and the renowned Argentine tango poet José María Contursi. Through an innovative fusion of Tango Argentino, Modern Dance, live music, and singing, the production immerses the audience into the bittersweet world of longing, which is at the heart of Tango Argentino.

New musical compositions and arrangements, based on original texts by José María Contursi, have been created specifically for this project by the internationally renowned Argentine musicians “Duo Sonder”. The choreography was developed collaboratively by Astria Apel and renowned Tango Argentino artist Mariano Galeano. As a highlight to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Martha Graham Dance Company of New York, one of the principal roles will be performed by Christine Dakin, legendary former Principal Dancer and Artistic Director of the Martha Graham Dance Company.

GRICEL – A TANGO STORY est une création originale de théâtre musical où le tango argentin rencontre la danse moderne. Le spectacle est interprété par une distribution internationale de danseurs et de musiciens de tout premier plan, venus d’Argentine, d’Europe et de New York.

Créée par la chorégraphe primée Astria Apel, l’œuvre raconte l’histoire vraie et bouleversante de l’amour passionné et tragique entre Gricel et le célèbre poète de tango argentin José María Contursi. À travers une fusion innovante de tango argentin, de danse moderne, de musique live et de chant, la production plonge le public dans l’univers doux-amer du manque et de la nostalgie, au cœur même du tango argentin.

De nouvelles compositions musicales et des arrangements originaux, basés sur les textes de José María Contursi, ont été spécialement créés pour ce projet par les musiciens argentins de renommée internationale Duo Sonder. La chorégraphie a été développée en collaboration par Astria Apel et le célèbre artiste de tango argentin Mariano Galeano. En point d’orgue de cette production, et à l’occasion du 100ᵉ anniversaire de la Martha Graham Dance Company de New York, l’un des rôles principaux sera interprété par Christine Dakin, figure légendaire de la danse moderne, ancienne danseuse étoile et directrice artistique de la Martha Graham Dance Company.
